Plato Pines-n-tiques is a wonderful shop housed in an old restored barn 35 miles west of the Twin Cities just off Highway 212 at Plato, MN. Eighteen years ago the owners, Saundra and Howard Schaitberger, restored an 85+ year-old barn with a new roof, doors, windows, cement, electricity, heat and air conditioning, plus many other upgrades! In 2014 the barn, milk house, tool shed and original summer kitchen will be 104 years old!
Next they invited dealers and consigners from all corners of MN to come and fill the 5,000 square feet with collectibles, antiques and now VINTAGE and UP-CYCLED merchandise gathered from all around the country. The endeavor has been extremely successful!
Throughout the year “The Barn” is host to many events. In the spring there is a two week egg hunt - select one egg and you might win a $5, $10, or, if you find the Golden Egg, a $50 gift certificate.
Save the last weekend in August before Labor Day! This year will mark the 10th Annual "Treasure Trek" - a hunt for treasures that stretches from Glencoe, MN to Chaska, MN (and many points in between) along Highway 212. During the Treasure Trek “The Barn” is host to an indoor and outdoor flea market! Be sure to plan to stop this August! They maintain they have NEVER had an unhappy traveler!
The weekend before Thanksgiving always brings “The Barn’s” Holiday Open House! Mrs. Claus has been there every year for the past seventeen years (2014 will be her eighteenth year!) to help find those special gifts that will be remembered for years to come! The barn is always beautifully decorated to help you "get into the spirit", everyone loves the variety, and it’s easy to fill your holiday gift lists.
“The Barn” even has a facebook page (facebook.com/PlatoPinesNTiques) where you can post a wish and they'll try to help you find your request, or, when you visit or call with a request they’ll post it on their wish list board. They have many great stories, gathered over the years, of matches made between "I never thought I'd find that!" treasure hunters and some fatastic treasures!
And finally, Questers have visited “The Barn” from all over the United States, England, Germany, Singapore, and many other countries, some even coming "before a trip to the Mall of America!” According to Saundra, Questers know they get at least four to five calls a week to sell old items, so “The Barn” is never boring! “New old things” arrive every day, always filling it with exactly what is wanted. Many visitors have commented that, "Once I’ve arrived I find it really hard to leave!”
The drive is easy - just 35 miles west of I-494 in the Twin Cities on Highway 212 (or about two hours east of the South Dakota/Minnesota border) - with state signs to guide you both to the east and west of Plato, Minnesota. "The Barn" is located just one mile south of Higway 212 at the corner of Babcock Avenue (County Road 81) and 97th Court.
